Beyond the Hills - Cristian Mungiu
*Editor’s note: To call the pace of Mungiu’s film ‘slow’ is an understatement. In spite of this, I can’t anything I’d cut or trim as taking anything out would probably detract from its powerful final 40 minutes. The film never feels unnecessary or bloated as Mungiu has an axe to grind with the state of the police, orphanages, hospital, religion, friendship, sexuality and more in contemporary Romania for its entire 155 minutes. Don’t let the salacious promise of lesbian nuns and an exorcism mislead you; this is wonderfully slow and beautiful cinema that I can only imagine gets better on subsequent viewings.
