Martin Luther was asked, what would you do if tomorrow the world would come to an end, and he said, ‘I would plant an apple tree today.’ This is a real good answer. I would start shooting a movie.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans- Werner Herzog
I’m not completely sold on Nic Cage; he just doesn’t ‘work’ for me. That being said, I loved watching him be bat-shit crazy in a Herzog film. Working with Herzog, Cage doesn’t just act crazy, he embodies crazy and every sick urge that anyone else would just shrug off and laugh about internally. It’s fantastic to see him throw himself so recklessly into a role that shows the potential hinted at in Wild at Heart. Drop some acid, do a line of coke and fuck a prostitute in an alley while her boyfriend watches and then watch Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.
Oh, avoid the original. It is absolute shit.

Seeing as I hated the original, I didn’t think it was possible that I’d love this film. Herzog proved me wrong and distilled the absolute madness that was Nic Cage’s performance into a hilarious and batshit crazy film. If you’re not in awe of the scene where Cage, while high on coke, coerces a girl to blow him *insert Mel Gibson reference here* in front of her boyfriend at gun point, I don’t know what to say to you.
